Mushrooms are among the most delicious and nutritious dishes that may leave you having a watering mouth once you are done with eating. They can make a wonderful meal especially when they are added to some savory dishes such as pizza, salad, pasta among other dishes. Many people prefer eating raw mushrooms, but it is probably because they haven’t gotten a chance of tasting mushrooms that have been professionally cooked. After they happen to taste well-cooked mushrooms, that’s when they will come to understand the necessity of having them cooked.
Before getting to know about the flavor of the mushrooms, it is important to know that most are of the same variety despite them being of different size and color. Planting time and picking them at different ages is what determines the flavor and appearance it will have during the time of consumption.
Before cooking it, it will be better to know the nutritional value of mushrooms. This is one among the few varieties of foods that are very rich in vitamin D. they are also very good boosters of the body immune system, based on the study by Tufts University. When looking for the best mushrooms to cook, ensure that you select the unblemished ones. Also, pick the ones that have their stems attached.
After you have picked the mushrooms, it is time to wash them. Do not let them stay in the water for long as they absorb moisture very quickly. Rinsing them and wiping them using a dry paper towel is good enough to make them clean.
After cleaning the mushrooms, you are supposed to make them ready for cooking. For instance, Portobello mushrooms require having their gills removed so as to avoid the leakage of their dark liquid when cooking. Simply scrape out the gills using a spoon and wipe them using a paper towel. Also, remove the stem by slicing the mushroom cap.
After they are ready, you can cook your mushrooms using either of the following ways.
- Mushrooms taste best when sauted.
- Two tablespoons of olive oil
- 8 ounces of sliced mushrooms
- ¼ teaspoons sea salt
- Any available spices
Place 2 tablespoons of olive oil in a pan and heat over medium heat. To the oil, add 8 ounces of your sliced mushrooms and stir. Add ¼ teaspoon of sea salt.
Add any spices that you may have. Allow it to cook for about 10 minutes and ensure that you stir it frequently especially when the mushrooms appear to be brown. This is because when the mushrooms begin to cook, moisture is released and a sizzling sound produced. After releasing moisture, they turn brown thus they require frequent stirring during this stage.
When they have become brown and slightly crisped at the edges, you can take them off from the heat and serve them.
Mushrooms can also be enjoyed when marinated. But you will have to simmer them first so that they can be able to absorb the marinade.
Simmer the mushrooms in boiling water containing 1 teaspoon of sea salt. Add one pound of mushrooms and let them boil over medium heat. Simmer them for 5 minutes for them to soften. Put the softened mushrooms into a large bowl and keep it safe.
Put ¼ cup of olive oil, 1 minced garlic clove, 2 tablespoons of white wine vinegar, ¼ teaspoon sea salt, and teaspoons of Italian herbs in a medium bowl. In the bowl containing the mushrooms, add the marinade and mix them to fully coat the mushrooms. Cover and keep them in a refrigerator and let them marinate for two hours.
